It has been reported in the Sun newspaper that compensation payments made to victims of MRSA and C difficile infections reached £10 million last year. The NHS Litigation department said that there were 93 successful claims for damages last year averaging £70,000.
Joyce Robins, of campaign group Patient Concern, likened the pay-outs to "throwing NHS money down the drain". It was suggested by her that "Perhaps we need an accounts system that shows, hospital by hospital, whether big damages are associated with low cleaning bills. Then the message might get through."
Simon Burns, Health Minister said MRSA and C. difficile had in fact reduced by 29 per cent and 17 per cent respectively in the past year.
He said the NHS needed to take a zero tolerance approach to all avoidable infections.
